Complementary Therapies

Most of our herbs derive from plants and fungi; they come in powdered form and are consumed as a tea. When patients receive an herbal formula, it is made custom for them and their condition. Because in the Chinese system herbs interact differently with different constitutions, the same herb will have different effects on different people. More, they may have different effects on the same person at different times. Thus, our providers carefully curate a formula for your particular situation based on your needs and diagnostics.

Moxa, also known as mugwort, is an herb commonly found throughout the abandoned fields of Western New York. In the case of Moxibustion, the moxa is either loose and applied directly or compressed into a stick about the size of a kindergartener’s pencil, which is lit and held just above the target area. Heat from the moxa creates blood flow and movement especially through painful, sticky, or arthritic joints, reducing pain and improving mobility. The sensation is often described as a pleasant heat that saturates into the joint and muscle.

Gua means ‘to rub’ or ‘to create friction.” In gua sha, an acupuncturist uses a small tool to manipulate the fascia in target areas. It’s a form of soft tissue mobilization that is effective in reducing restrictions in muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments in order to promote greater mobility and a better healing environment for injured tissue. It is also effective in breaking down scar tissue. Gua sha may leave a small bruise that lasts for a couple of days.
